Best documentaries Netflix: 28 movies streaming right now (April 2020) - For The Win

If you are doing your part and staying inside during these sad, scary days of coronavirus, we salute you. You're probably also looking for some ways to fill the hours.

Well, we can help there. We've got recommendations for 28 fantastic documentaries that are currently streaming on Netflix. Some are informative, some are entertaining, all are well done. They're in no particular order, just a bunch of movies we really enjoyed.

1. MISS AMERICANA — This Taylor Swift biodoc is much more moving than I ever would have imagined, and breaks down the perfect pop star to a place of real humanity.

2. FYRE — A delicious look into Fyre Festival, one of the great scams of our time, and the aftermath.

3. HOMECOMING — Another musical biodoc that gives a slightly more broken down view of someone — Beyonce — who so embodies perfection it's often hard to see her as a real person.

4. AMY — This documentary on the life and death of Amy Winehouse benefits from home video footage that was shared from her rise to fame.

5. BILL MURRAY STORIES — This charming little documentary explores the famous Bill Murray stories you've probably heard. (My favorite has Bill Murray coming up behind someone in a park, giving him a hug, and then whispering in his ear "they'll never believe you.") What's so magical is the film finds out just enough of them to be true to make any of them possible.

6. ONE OF US — This heartbreaking and incredible look into three people trying to extricate themselves from an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect in New York City will appeal to anyone who is a fan of powerful films.

7. CRIP CAMP — This documentary gives a heartwarming look at a summer camp that was developed for kids with disabilities.

8. ICARUS — What's so incredible about this Oscar-winning film is that it's not at all the film the director set out to make. What starts as a Supersize Me-esque look at athlete doping soon turns into an international espionage thriller, and becomes a masterwork in the process.

9. SENNA — One of the great sports documentaries ever made. Senna goes beyond the racing world to become a film about pride, and the sacrifices we make for greatness.

10. MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL — The footage is so incredible, the music so good, this is a must-watch for anyone with even a passing interest in jazz.

11. OPERATION ODESSA — The wild true story of a Russian gangster, a Cuban spy, and a Miami hustler who came together for the deal of a lifetime — trying to negotiate the sale of a nuclear submarine.

12. JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI — My vote for the greatest food documentary ever made, JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI tells the story of a small sushi restaurant in a subway station, and how its owner's quest for perfection drove it to be one of the best restaurants in the world. It starts as a film about the drive for excellence, and ends as one about a father and his sons.

13. SOUR GRAPES — A spectacular true crime thriller about a scam artist who fooled the world of ultra high-end wine collectors. One in which everyone, top to bottom, comes out looking foolish, and you get to sit at home and laugh.

14. SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN — Quest films are amazing, and there are few better than this hunt for a once great musician, Rodriguez, who was almost lost to history.

15. LA 92 -- An unflinching and terrifying look at the LA riots of 1992. This doc not only manages to show the carnage unfold, but provides important context and understanding of how the powder keg blew.

16. KNOCK DOWN THE HOUSE -- This film started as a look at several first-time political candidates in 2018, but eventually focuses in on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and her improbable run to Congress.

17. THE DAWN WALL -- We've had an absolutely staggering run of mountaineering documentaries recently, and this one stands right there among the best.

18. WOODSTOCK: THREE DAYS THAT DEFINED A GENERATION -- The incredible found footage is what sets this doc apart, as it shows not just the performances but the entire event, from setup to breakdown. It makes you feel a part of the magic.

19. MISSION CONTROL -- My favorite part of APOLLO 13 was always the harsh cuts back to the control room, where the frantic men down on Earth work tirelessly to save the lives of the astronauts up in space. This documentary tells the stories of the real men who made it happen.

20. THEATER OF LIFE -- It's almost impossible not to get swept up into chef Massimo Bottura's story in this food documentary, which shows Bottura opening up a soup kitchen for the hungry with leftover food that gets wasted by stores.

21. MOUNTAIN -- This is one of the strangest documentaries I've ever seen, but I truly loved it. Forget a plot or conflict — instead the film carries you to the top of the world's largest peaks, only pausing to offer thoughtful, sporadic narration. It's strange and mesmerizing.

21. BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY -- Did you know Hollywood starlet Hedy Lamarr invented a radio system that would go on to be the foundation for Bluetooth technology? You would if you watched this entertaining documentary.

22. THE BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL -- This magical film follows Kurt Russell's dad, Bing Russell, and his quest to form a semi-pro baseball team.

23. THE LAST MAN ON THE MOON -- Many people know Neil Armstrong. Few know Eugene Cernan, the last man to step foot on the moon. In telling his story, the documentarians also ask big questions about why our space program ended, and where we go from here.

24. THEY'LL LOVE ME WHEN I'M DEAD -- A funny and dark look at the life of the great auteur Orson Welles is a great watch for cinephiles.

25. JIM & ANDY -- Is this documentary, which shows Jim Carrey's method acting performance as Andy Kauffman in THE MAN ON THE MOON, a real documentary? Is it another prank, an ode to Andy Kauffman's anti-humor? Trying to decide for yourself is half the fun. One of my favorite film-watching experiences in some time.

26. VIRUNGA -- A documentary which looks at a gorilla refuge in the Congo, and the dedicated men who protect the animals inside of it.

27. THE SQUARE -- This film lets you go inside Tahrir Square and watch as the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 plays out in real time. One of the most incredible feats of modern filmmaking.
