Beyoncé Visual Album ‘Black Is King’ Coming to Disney Plus - Variety

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:51 AM PDT

In a surprise, Disney Plus announced a new visual album from Beyoncé — "Black Is King," inspired by "The Lion King" — is coming to the streaming service next month.

"Black Is King," written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé, will premiere globally on Disney Plus on July 31, 2020. That's just after the one-year anniversary of the theatrical release of Disney's "The Lion King" remake, for which Queen Bey voiced Nala (and which launched on Disney Plus in January).

A one-minute teaser trailer for "Black Is King" dropped Saturday night on beyonce.com. [Watch the trailer below or on YouTube at this link.]

The film is based on the music of "The Lion King: The Gift," released last year in conjunction with the Disney pic, and stars the album's featured artists and some special guest appearances. The Beyoncé-produced album features Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter and Jessie Reyez, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Busiswa and Salatiel.

"'Black Is King' is a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience," Disney and Beyoncé's Parkwood Entertainment said in announcing the visual album. "The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future."

According to the companies, Beyoncé's visual album reimagines lessons of "The Lion King" for "today's young kings and queens in search of their own crowns." The film was in production for one year with a cast and crew that represent "diversity and connectivity."

"Black Is King" pays tribute to voyages of Black families throughout time. The visual album tells the story of a young king's "transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity." His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father's teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.

"These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power," according to the announcement. "'Black Is King' is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence."

On Juneteenth, Beyoncé surprise-dropped "Black Parade," co-written with her husband Jay-Z, focused on Black empowerment and centered on the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests following the killing of Minneapolis man George Floyd by police.

Disney Plus recently stopped offering its free seven-day trial offer, a move coming ahead of the service's July 3 premiere of the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton."

Beyoncé Accepts the 2020 BET Awards' Humanitarian Award From None Other Than Michelle Obama - E! NEWS

Who runs the world? Girls. And, who helps the world? Beyoncé!

Tonight, at the 2020 BET Awards, the Grammy-award winning artist was recognized with the show's Humanitarian Award, honoring the star for her many initiatives that help those in need.

The well-deserved award was also perfectly presented by former First Lady Michelle Obama, who herself has built a legacy with her charity work both when she was in the White House and as a co-founder of the Obama Foundation alongside her husband Barack Obama.

Addressing the audience via video, Michelle started off with, "I am here today to talk about the queen. You know the one!"

She continued that, "Ever since she was a little girl in Houston, Beyonce Knowles Carter has been lighting up the stages and gracing the world with her talent with her generosity of spirit, and with her love for her community. You can see it in everything she does, from her music that give voice to black joy and black pain, to her activism that demands justice for black lives."

Beyoncé drops surprise single 'Black Parade' on Juneteenth - Fox Business

Beyoncé did not let Juneteenth pass without dropping one of her signature surprises — a new single called "Black Parade."

"I'm going back to the South, I'm going back where my roots ain't watered down," Beyoncé sings, opening the track. At several points on Friday's release, the singer tells listeners to "Follow my parade."

Proceeds from the song will benefit Black-owned small businesses, a message entitled "Black Parade Route" on the singer's website said. The post included links to dozens of Black-owned businesses.

JUNETEENTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

"Happy Juneteenth. Being Black is your activism. Black excellence is a form of protest. Black joy is your right," the message said.

Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. While the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the South beginning Jan. 1, 1863, it wasn't enforced in many places until after the end of the Civil War two years later. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn't reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas.

THESE US COMPANIES ARE OBSERVING JUNETEENTH AS A WORK HOLIDAY THIS YEAR

"We got rhythm, we got pride, we birth kings, we birth tribes," Beyoncé sings toward the end of the nearly five-minute song.

Juneteenth — typically a day of both joy and pain — was marked with new urgency this year, amid weekslong protests over police brutality and racism sparked by the May 25 death of George Floyd, a Black man, being detained by Minneapolis police.

Beyoncé spoke out on social media in the wake of Floyd's death.

"We're broken and we're disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain," she said in an Instagram video that called for people to sign a petition demanding justice for Floyd.

The singer also joined the call for charges against the officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, who was gunned down in March by officers who burst into her Kentucky home. Beyoncé wrote in a letter Sunday to Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron that the three Louisville police officers "must be held accountable for their actions." Cameron has asked for patience amid a probe, but Louisville's mayor announced Friday that one of the officers would be fired.

The release of "Black Parade" is the singer's latest philanthropic effort. In April, she announced her BeyGOOD charity would partner with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's Start Small campaign to provide $6 million in relief funds to a variety of groups working to provide basic necessities in cities like Detroit, Houston, New York and New Orleans.

It's also the latest surprise release from the singer, who along with husband Jay-Z released the nine-track album "Everything Is Love" in 2018 with no notice. In 2013, Beyoncé released the self-titled album "Beyoncé," also without any notice.

"I hope we continue to share joy and celebrate each other, even in the midst of struggle," she wrote in an Instagram post announcing the release of "Black Parade." "Please continue to remember our beauty, strength and power."

Beyonce shares open letter penned by her activist mom Tina Lawson on Heroes Act bill - Daily Mail

Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:56 PM PDT

Beyonce took to Instagram on Sunday to share an open letter her mother Tina Lawson penned urging U.S. senators to pass the Heroes Act bill in an effort she said was to 'ensure that our vote is protected this election cycle.'

The 38-year-old songstress wrote in the caption, 'I am proud to stand with my mother, @mstinalawson and the Mothers of The Movement to send this open letter to senators calling for the passing of the Heroes Act. 'This bill would help provide funding to ensure that our vote is protected this election cycle. Read the letter and add your voice with ours.

The Houston native urged her 149 million followers that 'together we can be the change we want to see in the world,' ending with the powerful hashtag #ANDSTILLIVOTE.

The Grammy-winning star included a petition to sign in support of Lawson's letter, which was addressed to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer.

The HEROES (Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions) Act, which was proposed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic - and its subsequent impact on all aspects of life - is aimed at protecting the voting rights of the 'disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities.'

Lawson had a number of celeb cosigners to her letter, including Beyoncé and Solange, Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett Smith, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Regina King and Kerry Washington.

The letter is also cosigned by the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner and the matriarch of George Floyd's family, among others.

Lawson said in the letter, 'We are concerned Black women. Many of us are mothers of Black sons and daughters -- some of whom have lost our children -- and we have a vision for a new America.

'This past month has culminated in a moment of reckoning for the country.'

She continued: 'As members of the Black community, we are hurting, we are angry, and we are anguished by the repeated assaults of Black bodies, brought to light once again by the recent murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of what has for too long been incorrectly coined "justice."

'But even in this moment, when we feel despair and deep exhaustion, we remember one essential truth: our voices have power.'

In her letter, Lawson noted that 'unnecessary roadblocks to the ballot' prevent in the effort to 'create a democracy that truly represents us all.'

She added: 'Chaos at polling places in recent primaries has demonstrated that elections officials are unprepared to hold safe and accessible elections this year,' noting disastrous scenes in Milwaukee, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Kentucky, where voters' lives were endangered amid the pandemic, as they to stand in long lines at understaffed election facilities.

'This is modern-day voter suppression plain and simple,' Lawson said. 'Voters in all these states risked their health, and that of their communities, simply to make their voices heard. People should be able to exercise their constitutional right to vote and stay healthy, even during a pandemic. '

'We should not have to choose between public health and a functioning democracy.'

Beyoncé Wasn't Interested in Dating Jay-Z Until Her Mom Convinced Her to Give Him a Chance - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 19 Jun 2020 02:21 PM PDT

When asked to name a famous celebrity couple, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are usually the first to come to people's minds. The pair have been together for nearly two decades and continue to prove that their love conquers all, even with relationship troubles thrown their way.

Though it seemed like Bey and Jay were always meant to be together, it turns out the singer wasn't "feeling" her now-husband when they first met. But thanks to Mrs. Tina Knowles-Lawson, Beyoncé was convinced to go on a date with the rapper, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z didn't start dating right away

Bey and Jay have been together for what seems like forever. Though they started a relationship shortly after their "03 Bonnie & Clyde" collaboration, getting Beyoncé to go on a date with the rapper actually took a little convincing.

The pair first crossed paths in 2000 when Beyoncé was about 18, and Jay-Z would have just turned 30. At the time, Beyoncé was achieving mega-success with her girl group Destiny's Child, while Jay-Z was also making big moves in the music industry.

In the song "713" off the couple's 2018 joint album, Everything Is Love, the rapper reveals he developed feelings for the singer at the 2000 MTV Spring Break festival, where they both performed.

However, it wasn't until the following year that Bey and Jay had a real, face-to-face conversation at the post-9/11 "Concert for New York City" benefit at Madison Square Garden.

According to insiders, the "99 Problems" rapper asked Beyoncé for her number, and they spent a few months talking on the phone.

Though Jay was smitten with her, Beyoncé reportedly didn't feel the same way.

"He's nice," Beyoncé said, according to J. Randy Taraborrelli's 2015 biography Becoming Beyoncé, "but I don't know…I'm not feelin' him."

Apparently, Bey's mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, was the one who encouraged her to go on one date with Jay to see what happens. And as we can easily guess, the date probably went very well because Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together ever since.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé have been a couple ever since

Beyoncé giving Jay-Z a chance clearly worked out in their favor because in 2003, they became an official couple, but didn't publically display their relationship until the following year at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards (the same award show where Bey would memorably reveal her baby bump seven years later).

In 2005, Beyoncé opened up about her and Jay's relationship for the first time with Vanity Fair.

"We give each other advice, but we respect each other's business, and we don't really get involved with that," she said of their romance. "When I'm not working, I don't want to talk about business. I don't want to think about it. I want to turn my phone off."

Fast forward to April 2008, Jay-Z and Beyoncé tied the knot in a secret, intimate wedding ceremony at the rapper's penthouse home in New York City.

Four years later, they welcomed their daughter Blue Ivy. And in 2016, the couple had their twins, Sir and Rumi Carter.

Today, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are still happily married as they just recently celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary.

And to think, the Grammy winners probably wouldn't be one of Hollywood's most inspiring power couples had Beyoncé not been encouraged to give Jay-Z a chance.
