Beautiful Beginnings with Rhomlon Brow Pencils

The Rhomlon Brow Pencils are those things that worked for me, way back then when I just started makeup, when I could not bring myself to buy any single item that is more than $20.

These pencils are only $1.90 each, and can be bought from local beauty supplies stores like Chameleon, Sinma, Ta Zhiang, etc.

I started out with only the black one, because back then, I knew nothing about eyebrow colours, and to me, my hair and my eyebrows are black in colour, so surely, my eyebrow pencil should come in black!

I didn't even know how to draw in my brows. My mum ain't no taught me, but I just knew that eyebrows are very important in makeup, and that I must have an eyebrow pencil in my tiny little makeup kit. This is because I rummaged in my mum's makeup kit quite a lot since 6-7 years old, and I always knew she has a few eyebrow pencils. She even gave me some of her old brow pencils, to be used as colour pencils, because I love drawing, I told her that her pencils are very pigmented/creamy.

Of course, I didn't use the words "pigmented", or "creamy" back then. I just told her that her pencils are very nice.

Anyhow, I eventually bought the brown brow pencil because I found that black was way too strong. And I finally got the maroon one too because that is all Rhomlon has, and I wanted to try all.

The swatches are below.

You wouldn't see much from the swatches because brow pencils tend not to show up at all on the skin. But when put into eyebrow hairs, they come off like nobody's business. You will see below.

I had the black brow pencil on my left eyebrow (your right), and nothing on my right (your left). See how incredibly pigmented that is? I think I look like those young male K-pop star. haha!

In case you're wondering, the brush on the cap of the Rhomlon pencil actually works. And in the photo above, I used the brush to blur out the pencil lines.

Right now, I simply don't use the Rhomlon eyebrow pencils anymore, because I find the black one way too black, even though I have traditional Asian jet black hair. The brown in too brown that it makes my eyebrow look red. And the maroon, of course, is not my colour at all.

But I only found out all these after a year or two into makeup, when Youtube Beauty started blossoming. Can you believe, that I actually walked around like that all the time, before there were Youtube beauty gurus? I walked around with completely mismatched maroon eyebrows... And I thought it was cool.

Haha!

After that, I found out from Youtube that eyebrows should be coloured in two shades lighter if you have black/dark hair, and coloured two shades darker if you have blonde/light hair. And I got myself a proper eyebrow pencil, the Empro one, three years ago. That single pencil costs some $25, and was easily one of my biggest makeup investment then.

But I still believe that such pencils shouldn't be expensive. And I truly believe in highly affordable brow pencils, so I decided to buy the  Daiso Eyebrow Pencil to test. It turns out that I am right - that $2 pencils can be as good!

I took a very, very long time to learn how to draw in my brows properly. This is the most crazy part of makeup in my opinion. And I could never get it right. I used to spend 2-3 hours in the bathroom practising eyebrows. And brow pencils are the one thing that you can't get off once you make a mistake. Each time I get things wrong, it was a painful affair of rubbing and rubbing even harder to remove all that pencil.

Right now, if you're a beginner to makeup, I want to give you three tips:

1. Go out, and get the salesgirl at a proper makeup counter to draw your brows for you. Watch how she does it, and ask her for tips. They normally dish out personal tips freely, because really, it is part of their job as a customer service officer. And they know that you will almost never surpass them in terms of makeup skills (because most people do not end up going to makeup school).

Personally, I learned exactly which three points to take cue from when drawing my brows, from the salesgirl. And I also learned how to use a brow powder from another salesgirl.

2. Keep failing, and keep trying again. There really is no other way out of this, if you want to ever learn to do your own makeup.

3. While you're failing, and in the process of learning, don't let what people say get to you.

I have had friends telling me my lips look too oil (from the lipgloss), and my undereye white eyeliner is drawn all wrongly, and my loose powder look so cakey. It turns out that, my lipgloss was spoilt, and I needed to get a new one. My undereye white eyeliner was applied below the lashline, and not in the waterline. And my loose powder, was a lousy loose powder. It all turned better after I changed those things. So take the advice as a warning that something may be going wrong, seek out the root cause, but don't let it hurt you.

I guess it's time for rating!
I give Rhomlon Brow Pencils a 4/5!
I think it is creamy and pigmented, and it really worked great for me when I genuinely needed it, at a great price of $1.90.

Don't think I will ever throw these away because they are my first.

I wouldn't recommend you to buy it though. Simply because, in this time and age, there are other $2 pencils out there that are better. I never had access to what is on the market now, back then.

Last tip:
If you have dark hair, go for grey or taupe brown (greyish, no red tones). Both work for me. My $25 brow pencil (most expensive brow pencil I have), is actually light brown. And it works for my jet black hair.

Did you find brow-drawing easy? What is the most difficult thing to learn in makeup, in your opinion?
